LEAD WEB DEVELOPERS WITH RUBY ON RAILS EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Company: ASMALLWORLD
Location: New York, NY

ASMALLWORLD (ASW) is a dynamic invitation-only social networking site that uniquely brings together an international group of people of diverse backgrounds and interests. The network is different from all other social networks in that the contacts and relationships that occur online mimic those that occur in the real world. Member profiles are real and validated, relationships and friends trusted, and connections authentic. At its core this social network is a media company targeting international luxury brand advertisers seeking to attract valuable trendsetters and tastemakers.

We seek well-rounded software developers with experience leading the implementation of consumer-facing, web-based applications. The position requires an orientation towards usability and user-centric service-based product design. A broad and deep interest in technology is good; a passion for creating great products that make users happy is better – both are required. You should embrace the web (especially that second version of it everyone’s talking about with near-religious enthusiasm) while retaining a healthy skepticism of the froth and hype. Experience delivering non-trivial production Ruby on Rails code in a team environment is a must. “Fanboys” need not apply—we’re looking for mature professionals who are versatile thinkers capable of selecting the appropriate tool for a given situation. Some experience with AJAX and DHTML is required.

You will work with a highly experienced team of designers and developers helping to build a cutting-edge technology platform to lead our company through an exciting period of growth, We offer competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package. This position is located in our New York office.

Responsibilities:

  • You will collaborate with business stakeholders, designers and other developers to iteratively define, develop, test and implement new web-based functionality
  • You will conceptualize architectural frameworks
  • You will produce coherent and detailed project plans
  • You will project manage small teams of developers
  • You will lead and collaborate with other designers and developers

Requirements:

  • You have a solid understanding of the web from philosophical foundations to the nuts and bolts of its implementation
  • You are skilled in some combination of Java, Ruby, Python, PHP, and JavaScript (you know at least 2 very well)
  • You have some experience with AJAX and DHTML
  • You have a good understanding of relational databases in both their logical and physical aspects
  • You know SQL well and aren’t afraid to use it
  • You have experience delivering non-trivial production Ruby on Rails code
  • You have enough experience with OO design to understand its limitations
  • You’re an agile developer who appreciates the value of architecture and design
  • You’re as good at reading code as you are at writing it
  • You have the ability to make progress on a task before you have all of the information required to complete it
  • You have experience with AJAX
  • You like people and enjoy personal interaction as well as intellectual collaboration
  • You’re good at drawing pictures that effectively communicate your ideas
  • You’re opinionated and flexible

Strong pluses include:

  • Experience with eCommerce or Content Management
  • You digg or reddit on a regular basis
  • You blog, or at least comment on blogs
  • You are a regular user of del.icio.us, flickr, facebook, youtube, or some other shiny new web 2.0 service
  • You are a member of several online communities in which you sometimes post
